Whole-Hearted Devotion

Sunday, February 2, 2014

God asks that we be wholeheartedly devoted to him.  Such devotion comes with a price though - obedience to his word.  However, a relationship with God is like marriage.  There is a price that comes with marriage - commitment to one person for eternity, not straying, not sinning against that person.  But is that really even a cost, when you get to spend the rest of your life with the person you love?  Those are just things you automatically want to do, and the reward so outweighs the "cost".

This past week was very intense.  All I've been able to say about DTS so far is that it is good, but hard.  Very hard, but very good.  Nothing easy, no real breaks.  Just constant intensity.  Our topic this past week was Repentance and Forgiveness.  We spent the week discussing how God desires a personal relationship with him and what is required from us for that to happen is whole-hearted devotion.  Sin gets in the way of that and we need to repent (the greek word means to have a new mind - We need to have a total change of mind and heart, changing our ways entirely) and obey God.  We need to come to God with humility and a true desire to be close to him.

Our application day (you learned all this stuff, now use it!) was on Friday.  We did group confession, which is about as terrifying as it sounds, but has much better results than you would expect.  We were all scared to bare our souls to each other, afraid of judgement, but what really happened was an amazing time of coming together in unity and support for each other.  We were able to receive forgiveness from God for things we had done and release forgiveness to people we were holding grudges against.  There was lots and lots and lots of prayer.  It was really powerful.

We were really exhausted, physically and emotionally, by the end of the week.  I'm sensing a trend...

Elections were held today in Thailand.  It's a very complicated situation here, with all the governmental things and political whatnot.  There have been demonstrations and shoot outs and all sorts of fun things going on.  We still haven't heard the results of the election, although they were basically predetermined anyways.  We are hoping that all the sketchy stuff will be dying down now though and we can finally venture into downtown Bangkok!

Prayer Requests:
strength - we are starting Intercession and Spiritual Warfare week!

continued and strengthened unity in our group

- personal growth in my relationship with God and strengthening of my faith

  1. Wow! Your first paragraph was almost exactly what I've been going through and about to write myself! So great to hear about all the things that you are experiencing on the other side of our world. :)

The Best Week of Your Life

"The Best Week of Your Life."  It's the tag line for Young Life camp, and it truly is not an exaggeration.  Last year was my first time at RockRidge Canyon (the camp in Princeton, BC where we take our group of teens every summer), and it far exceeded my expectations.  Everyone can tell you that RRC is the best place on earth and that camp is the best week of your life, but it's a completely different thing to experience it first hand.  My first time at camp I remember as a total whirlwind of activity and adventure.  It was a week long party and I loved every second of it.  I was excited to go and excited to be there and somehow my excitement/energy level remained at 110% all week. This year though, was a bit of a different story.  Being on a Summer Grant with Young Life this year, I was working on a lot more of the behind the scenes projects, and saw how much work truly goes into a week at camp (as well as the other duties of running the ministry at...

Storm Chasers

Another non-fiction writing course composition. This project was a revision of the manifesto we did a while back. ( http://shaneenstravels.blogspot.ca/2016/01/new-year-new-adventures.html ) This is based on a true story - one of the greatest nights I've spent with some of my best friends. The night we chased the storm. The Greatest Adventure Story The night was enticing and full of potential. A storm raged outside, a call to the heart of an adventurer.  However, the young band of heroes curled up safe and dry in their lair, where the sounds of the wind and rain could not reach them.  The adventurers were taking a night off of their usual daring deeds, choosing instead to idly watch the night pass them by.             The hero of a great adventure story must be more interested in experiencing life than they are in merely passing the time.  Excitement comes far more easily and frequently to the active adventurer...

The Beginning

Blog Post 1 Monday, January 13, 2014 The Beginning I'm in Thailand!  I left on Wednesday, January 8th at 1:30pm and flew to San Francisco.  I stayed the night in a hotel, and got to Facetime with my family.  Mandie (our dog) was very confused by my face and voice, but lack of physical presence.  I left the next morning at 11:00 for Tokyo, and then went from Tokyo to Bangkok.  The time change became very confusing for my mind and body.  I arrived at around midnight on Saturday. We live in sort of a middle class village.  The houses are absolutely beautiful, and are much nicer accommodations than we all were expecting.  Our classroom is about a five minute walk, near the entrance of our village. We have 12 girls on our DTS - no boys!  All of us are used to hanging out with mostly guys, so we were a bit apprehensive about it to begin with, but we all get along great already.  It's been a lot of fun getting to know each other in the...
